Jazz vocalist Coniece Washington pays homage to the great Shirley Horn in this eloquent recording of twelve songs from the Great American Songbook. ‘Shades of Shirley Horn’ is her heartfelt connection to the chanteuse. As Washington explains, “the first time I heard Shirley Horn sing, I fell in love with her groove and elegance. Due to my military service I never had the opportunity to attend one of her shows, but I always carry her sound in my heart.” The affinity is a strong one, and this recording captures not only the beauty of Coniece’s sensuous voice, but also that rare opportunity to remember the great Shirley Horn.
The ensemble is Coniece Washington – vocals, Vince Evans – piano, Wes Biles –bass, Jc Jefferson – drums, Kevin Kojo Prince – percussion, Thad Wilson – trumpet, Carl Carrington – flute, David B. Cole – guitar, with Seth Washington – poet.
The twelve songs are Here’s to Life, Get Out of Town, The Island, How Am I To Know, Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Crying, Our Love Is Here To Stay, Fever, If You Go, Dindi, Once I Loved, A Time for Love, and I Just Found Out About Love.
Just the right balance between fine rhythmic collaboration from fine musicians and the sensitivity of Coniece’s vocals make this a very special recording. It feels as though she is singing just for you.
