The PR notes for this recording are the best description: ‘Puppetry is a performance art form stretching back to Egypt over 4,000 years ago. Puppets on strings with marionettes in front of flashy backdrops were used beyond entertainment. They expressed the feelings of their cultures, sometimes as political statements, and also to induce laughter, romance, lament and even gestures of conflict. This musical depiction of puppets in 2022 is conjured up by Mid-Michigan composer Gregg Hill, and executed by guitarist Randy Napoleon, vocalist Aubrey Johnson, and a stellar all-star jazz ensemble.’
The ensemble – Randy Napoleon – guitar, arrangements & lyrics, Aubrey Johnson – vocals, Rodney Whitaker – bass, Quincy Davis – drums, Rick Roe – piano, Seth Ebersole – bass clarinet, Brandon Rose – bass, Will Crandell – drums, and Gregg Hill – lyrics.
The compositions (all by Gregg Hill) – Andy’s Lament, Fan-O-Gram, The Jazzdiddy Waltz, Lyrica, Moonscape, Puppets, Still Life with Tuba, The Unknown Ballade, Tone Colors, Truck Driver’s Blues, and Wide River
Fascinating and top-notch music and performances, this recording has something for every jazz lover!
