Igor Kogan

Bassist and composer Igor Kogan delivers vintage sounding hard and post bop originals with a muscular team of Jeremy Lappitt/ts, Joshua Aguiar/tp-fh, Marco Apicella/p and Matthew Baker/dr. Ethereal vocalist Tierney Sutton adds velvety harmony to a gorgeous “Vocalise”, stepping out for the rest of the set. The team stretches out with a soulful backbeater of “Big City” while the team sways on “New York Blues” after the leader displays his artistry on the intro. Kogan and Apicella give gentle conversations to the tender “Illumination” while flexing their muscles to Baker’s beat on “Takeoff”. Aguilar is clean and clear as he rides the rhythmic cadence of “expectations” with Lappitt in a Blue Note state of mind on the more elliptical “Qwerty aka False Start”. Timeless toe tapping treasures.
