The revered stages of Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall.
About the Album
Most of the pieces on Set Your Heart Free are composed by the accomplished team Mitchell Uscher and Roy Singer, Donna’s husband. Roy Singer is a classically trained pianist who has delved into performing with rock bands as well. Uscher, a veteran of musical theater, adds positivity to the compositions. The group is comprised of Brad Keller (piano), Ranses Colon (bass), Adolfo Herrera (drums), Melton Mustafa Jr. (saxophone), Yamin Mustafa (trumpet), and Greg Minnick (guitar). Mixed and mastered by Grammy winner Antonio (Tony) Tahan. The album packs a punch with exciting performances throughout.
Our Favorite Tracks
Singer employs a traditional ragtime feel on the opening track, “Destination Jazz,” all the trappings of the N’awlins sound. Singer digs in with her sanguine voice. If you don’t find yourself toe-tapping and finger-snapping music, you might just be a curmudgeon. Continuing in the same uplifting feeling, “When You Have a Dream,” becomes an optimistic anthem.
In an era that feels very heavy, Singer’s “Why Should Kids Have All the Fun” (Uscher and Singer) reminds all of us that the child inside of us should not be ignored. Singer’s siren voice conveys a sense of abandonment and freedom that comes with a child’s heart. Ranses Colon takes a particularly inspiring solo, as the ensemble trades eights with Singer scatting her heart out, you can hear the smile in her voice.
Set Your Heart Free is just what the doctor ordered; we need Singer’s brand of positivity in our lives. Ranging from child-friendly lullabies to the reminder to all adults that we need to remember the beauty life has to offer and not get caught up in the negativity. Singer might just be the ambassador of joy we all need.
